How to Start a 24/7 Lo-fi or Music Radio Channel on YouTube LIVE

Start a 24/7 lo-fi, jazz or music radio channel on YouTube LIVE from finished video files: music rights, audio-to-video prep, rotation length and cloud streaming.

Short answer

A 24/7 music radio channel on YouTube LIVE is a looping playlist of finished music videos streamed continuously. Clear the rights to every track, turn audio into MP4 video (a still image or loop visual plus AAC audio), export all files with identical settings, and stream the playlist with looping on from a cloud service so your computer does not have to run around the clock.

The “24/7 lo-fi radio” format — study beats, café jazz, synthwave, piano, ambient electronica — is one of the most recognizable uses of YouTube LIVE. It is also one of the most common questions in creator communities: how do I keep a music stream running without leaving my computer on?

This guide walks through building a 24/7 music or lo-fi channel from finished files, from music rights to playlist prep to running it from the cloud.

Who this works for

  • Lo-fi, jazz, study and focus music channels that rotate a library of tracks.
  • Independent musicians and producers who want their own catalog, visualizers or recorded performances playing live on their channel around the clock.
  • Labels and curators with properly licensed catalogs.
  • Genre radio channels (synthwave, classical, ambient) built from tracks they own or license.

What it does not cover: live DJ sets, live performances, or reacting on mic in real time. Those need a live production tool such as OBS. A cloud playout service like EasyLoop plays finished video files.

Step 1: Sort out music rights first

This is the step that decides whether your channel survives. A 24/7 stream plays every track many times, to anyone, worldwide.

  • Your own music: you are generally fine, but if you distribute through a service that registers your tracks in Content ID, whitelist your own channel so your stream is not claimed.
  • Licensed libraries: read the license. “Free for YouTube videos” does not always cover monetized live streams or continuous 24/7 broadcast.
  • Commissioned tracks: get the live-streaming and monetization rights in writing.
  • Popular commercial music without a license: expect claims, muted or blocked streams, or copyright strikes.

You are responsible for having the rights to everything you stream; neither YouTube’s tools nor your streaming service clear rights for you.

Step 2: Turn audio into stream-ready video

YouTube LIVE needs a video signal, and EasyLoop accepts video files (MP4, MOV, MKV) — not MP3 or WAV on their own. Combine each track or mix with a visual:

  • A still image (artwork, a scene) — the lowest file size.
  • A short animated loop (rain on a window, a desk scene, a turntable) repeated for the length of the audio.
  • An audio visualizer rendered in your editor.

With ffmpeg, a still image plus an audio mix becomes a stream-ready MP4 like this:

ffmpeg -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i cover.png -i mix.wav \
  -c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -preset slow -b:v 2500k -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 \
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf "scale=1920:1080" \
  -c:a aac -ar 48000 -ac 2 -b:a 192k -shortest -movflags +faststart radio-part-01.mp4

A still image needs far less bitrate than motion, which keeps files small. Keep every file on identical settings — same resolution, frame rate, codecs and audio sample rate — because playlist items must match each other.

Step 3: Plan the rotation

You do not need 24 hours of unique music. Decide how often repetition is acceptable:

  • Starter: 2–4 hours of tracks, looped. Low storage, fast to launch.
  • Established: 8–12 hours, so a regular listener rarely hears the same track twice in a day.
  • Large: multiple mixes rotated by stopping the stream and restarting with an updated playlist between sessions.

Storage estimate: bitrate (Mbps) × 0.45 ≈ GB per hour. A still-image stream at 2.5 Mbps video plus 192 kbps audio is roughly 1.2 GB per hour, so 8 hours of music is around 10 GB — about the size of the Start plan’s storage. A motion visual at 8 Mbps is roughly 3.6 GB per hour. Check current storage limits on the EasyLoop pricing page.

Many channels split a long rotation into several 1–3 hour “parts” rather than one giant file. That makes it easier to replace a track or a visual without re-exporting everything. The playlist guide explains ordering and compatibility in detail.

Step 4: Stream it from the cloud

Running a radio channel from OBS means the PC, power and home internet must never fail. For finished files, a cloud service removes those dependencies:

  1. Upload the files to EasyLoop and wait for each video check.
  2. Create a playlist in the order you want.
  3. Create a stream, assign the playlist, paste your YouTube RTMP URL and stream key, and turn looping on.
  4. Start the stream. Your computer does not need to stay on after it is running.

If the streaming process stops unexpectedly, EasyLoop attempts a controlled restart with the same configuration and records what happened. Interruptions can still happen with any provider, but your PC and home connection are no longer part of the chain. More on that in why YouTube LIVE keeps disconnecting.

Step 5: Make the channel worth subscribing to

A stream is not a channel strategy. Things that help a music channel stand out — none of them guaranteed:

  • A clear identity: one mood, one visual style, one name people remember (“rainy night jazz,” “piano for deep work”).
  • A descriptive title that says what the listener gets: genre, mood and use (study, sleep, focus).
  • Tracklists or artist credits in the description, especially for licensed or collaborative music.
  • Separate uploads of popular mixes as regular videos, which can be found in search and recommended independently of the live stream.
  • Chat moderation — 24/7 chats attract spam; YouTube’s moderation tools and trusted moderators help.

Monetization and replays

Two platform rules to plan around:

  • Monetization is YouTube’s decision. Its channel monetization policies cover repetitive (“inauthentic”) and reused content. Original music, curation with a clear purpose and original visuals give you a stronger position than generic loops.
  • Long streams may not archive. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured as a replay. A 24/7 radio stream is a live presence, not a library video; see the 12-hour archive strategy.

Choosing an EasyLoop plan for a music channel

  • Start ($9.90/month): one simultaneous stream up to 1080p and 10 GB storage — one radio channel with a modest rotation.
  • Creator ($29.90/month): four simultaneous streams and 50 GB — several genre streams, or one large library.
  • Studio ($59.90/month): eight simultaneous streams and 100 GB.

Prices are in USD with 10% off annual billing; confirm current details on the pricing page. The free trial gives you 3 cumulative streaming hours (with a trial watermark) to test your rotation and transitions first.

Try it with your own video. EasyLoop streams uploaded, prerecorded video to YouTube LIVE from the cloud — with looping, playlists, scheduling and automatic recovery attempts.

Frequently asked questions

What software do I need for a 24/7 lo-fi stream?

You need something that sends a looping playlist to YouTube continuously. OBS can do it if your computer stays on all the time. A cloud service such as EasyLoop streams uploaded video files to YouTube LIVE from its servers, with playlists and looping, so your computer can be off.

Can I upload MP3 or WAV files to make a music stream?

YouTube LIVE needs a video stream, and EasyLoop accepts video files such as MP4, MOV and MKV. Combine your audio with a still image or looping visual into an H.264 + AAC MP4 first, then upload the result.

Can I use copyrighted music in a 24/7 live stream?

Only if you have the rights for that use. Streaming music you do not have rights to can lead to Content ID claims, muted or blocked streams, or copyright strikes. Use your own music, licensed tracks whose license covers live streaming on YouTube, or music explicitly cleared for this use.

How many hours of music do I need for a 24/7 radio stream?

There is no fixed number. Many channels start with a few hours of music and add tracks over time. The constraints are how often you are happy for tracks to repeat and how much storage the video files use.

Can independent musicians use a 24/7 stream to promote their music?

Yes, if the music and visuals are theirs or licensed for this use. A looping stream of an artist's catalog, visualizers or recorded performances keeps a live presence on the channel. It does not guarantee listeners or growth.
